Xiaomi Black Shark 2 Pro Review: The Gaming Smartphone Of Your Dreams

Black Shark 2 Pro Review

The world of smartphone games in Indonesia is starting to move. Two big names have filled this segment: Asus with the ROG Phone II and (Xiaomi) Black Shark with the Black Shark 2 series.

BukaReview itself has the opportunity to try out the Pro version of Black Shark 2 for approximately two weeks. During that time we had an almost perfect gaming experience. This can be achieved thanks to fast specifications and an eye-catching screen.

The experience of gaming smartphone titles is very foreign to me. The reason is because I have worked in the hardware industry for 10 years and have tried many high-spec devices.

Interestingly, this is a flagship phone, not a gaming smartphone. There are no special requirements for the HP. So when I downloaded the Black Shark 2 Pro, I started wondering why it got the title of gaming smartphone. Isn’t the Black Shark 2 Pro “just” the new flagship smartphone? What makes the Black Shark 2 Pro different from a flagship phone? Are there any features that make Black Shark 2 Pro suitable for gaming?

Black Shark 2 Pro Review: Design

The first thing that sets the Black Shark 2 Pro apart from its flagship phones is its design. This product made by a subsidiary of Xiaomi has a cool design and a macho appearance. At first glance, you can tell that the Black Shark 2 Pro is a gaming product and not an ordinary flagship smartphone.

The back has RGB lighting. Lights flash on the “S” logo and two bars at the top and bottom of the logo.

The Black Shark also features RGB lighting on the left and right sides of the unit! Lights up on notifications, incoming calls, and charging. Interestingly, the settings section allows you to customize RGB lighting colors and effects.

The back of the Black Shark 2 Pro has a glass base. The device we tested had a reflective green accent. Interestingly, Black Shark doesn’t want the design to look plain.

The center and edges are made of steel with a matte finish. And the steel design makes the Black Shark 2 Pro really cool.

With a design like this, the Black Shark 2 Pro is anti-slip like most flagship phones with a glass design on the back. If you want to hold the product more comfortably, the built-in case makes the Black Shark 2 Pro sturdier and less slippery.

You can still find the two lenses (48MP and 12MP) for the camera in portrait mode on the back. Below the lens is the flash unit.

On the left are the volume buttons. You can use this button to decrease or increase the volume.

On the right is a sliding shape button that activates the Shark Space feature. This is a gaming feature of Black Shark 2 Pro. In addition to the scroll button, there is also a play button.

On the front are stereo speakers. When we tried it, the Black Shark 2 Pro could be quite noisy, which makes the gaming experience more interesting and enjoyable. The sound these headphones produce is good value for money.

At the bottom is the USB Type-C port. There is no 3.5mm audio port. Obviously Black Shark wants more fun playing with the existing speakers.

There is no fingerprint sensor on the device body. The reason, Black Shark puts sensors behind the screen. Yes, the Black Shark 2 Pro is equipped with an in-display fingerprint module.

Again, the Black Shark 2 Pro design is cooler than flagship phones which usually come with a plain glass design without decoration.

Black Shark 2 Pro Review: Screen

The Black Shark 2 Pro comes with an AMOLED display. It’s quite large at 6.39 inches. Full HD+ resolution (1080 x 2,340 pixels) is supported.

Unfortunately, the screen refresh rate is still standard at 60Hz. Monitors with this refresh rate are usually used. In fact, other gaming smartphones circulating in Indonesia already use a screen with a 120Hz refresh rate.

But is it bad to use a 60Hz refresh rate? Of course not. The reason is that some games in the Android ecosystem do not yet support 90Hz or 120Hz. So we can say that 60Hz is still good enough for the device.

Black Shark himself said he prefers a 60Hz screen so that the Black Shark 2 Pro is not too big.

The AMOLED display on the Black Shark 2 Pro itself is amazing. The displayed image is bright and clear. Of course it will be greatly influenced by videos and photos. Rendered images look amazing when creating Full HD videos. Setting the video to a lower resolution will definitely spoil the displayed image.

I took the time to ask my colleagues about the photos and videos displayed on the AMOLED screen of the Black Shark 2 Pro. As a result, they were surprised by the photos that were presented. The displayed image can move smoothly on the screen.

Interestingly, the Black Shark 2 Pro’s screen has 240Hz touch capability and 43.5ms latency. This means the screen is more sensitive to touch.

Touch the screen and the desired character will move or be released after 43.5ms. Other monitors typically have latency greater than 50ms. For better understanding, latency here refers to the level of touch response time between touch and system response.

This technique is very useful for playing shooting games like PUBG or COD Mobile.

Black Shark 2 Pro Review: Specs and Gaming Experience

Before discussing my playing experience with the Black Shark 2 Pro, I recommend looking at the specifications first.

The device is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855+ chipset. The chipset is slightly different from the Snapdragon 855. The model used by the Black Shark 2 Pro is a faster overclocked version.

There are two configurations of RAM and storage capacities: 8GB + 128GB and 12GB + 256GB. The first configuration of the device we tested was 8GB + 128GB.

Interestingly, the storage system used already uses UFS 3.0 technology. This means reading and writing data can be faster.

I don’t think it’s necessary to include test results in AnTuTu. The reason is, the results will definitely be higher than other flagship phones thanks to the specifications used.

One thing that stands out is the experience of playing Black Shark 2 Pro. This product is definitely a gaming smartphone.

To play, activate the Shark Space function by moving the button up. As already revealed, the Shark Space button is above the power button.

What does Shark Time do? Basically, Shark Space is a game player. We will put all our toys in one container. Shark Space also turns off all phone messages and notifications, freeing up unnecessary memory for games. Simply put, Shark Time will make your gaming experience even more perfect.

In the game, you can swipe down from the top right of the screen. Well, this step will open the gamer studio. In this menu you can set many convenient gameplay-related settings, such as enabling or disabling notifications and rejecting all incoming calls.

Click on Gamer Studio to set the desired performance. There is a mod called Ludicrous Mode. This mode can improve CPU and GPU performance and allow temperatures to reach the maximum the device can handle. With it, the phone works in maximum mode, making the game smoother and smoother.

We tested Black Shark 2 Pro with some of today’s popular games, from Mobile Legend: Bang Bang, PUBG, and Asphalt 9 to COD Mobile.

results? As expected, the Black Shark 2 Pro handles all of these games very smoothly. Even with all settings set to the correct alignment, which is the highest graphics setting, I didn’t feel any lag at all.

Black Shark 2 Pro runs on the Android 9.0 (Pie) operating system with an interface called Joy UI. The screen is completely “clean” and virtually bloatware free. Perhaps the goal is to make the system as light as possible when running games.

Interestingly, the Black Shark 2 Pro comes with a controller accessory! Playing FPS and MOBA games looks more “easy” or “cheat” because it is so easy to move your character.

The combination of game support software features, specifications and accessories makes the gaming experience very enjoyable. This is why the Black Shark 2 Pro can be called a gaming smartphone, not just a flagship smartphone.

Black Shark 2 Pro Review: Battery and Cooling System

Also, the 4000mAh battery in this device is very powerful. Black Shark can optimize its battery with the current system. My battery only decreased by 20% after playing Mobile Legends: Bang Bang 4 times in a row. The duration of the game itself is about 45 minutes.

The Black Shark 2 Pro also has an excellent cooling system. This product is equipped with a liquid cooling plate and a tube cooling plate. After 45 minutes of non-stop play, the temperature rose to 36 degrees Celsius. very good.

Black Shark 2 Pro Review: Camera

For a gaming smartphone, the Black Shark 2 Pro is equipped with a camera that is quite capable. The main camera has a resolution of 48 megapixels with an f/1.8 lens slot. The second camera has a 12-megapixel resolution with an f/2.2 lens slot and 2x optical zoom.

On the front there is a 20 megapixel camera with an f/2.0 lens slot.

The camera shots are very good. The details are well preserved. However, the color is a bit faded.

Night photos (Night mode) of this device are also good. The details are still well preserved.

If you use a 48MP camera, don’t be surprised by the file size of the resulting image. One image can be more than 20 MB in size.

Here are some pictures of the Black Shark 2 Pro.
